I am reviewing this hotel from the perspective of a neurodivergent person (with autism) who is sensitive to noise and heat. I really loved the location of this place. It is so close to Matsumoto castle and the park that you can go a few times a day just to relax and walk, and to enjoy the castle itself during the day and the light show at night during winter. During my 2 nights I went 5 times to the park as it was convenient and I enjoyed walking around. It's also not too far from the station, an easy 15 or so minutes walk and there's a few convenience stores 5 minutes walk away. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and happy to answer my questions. The room temperature was fully controllable in the main annex building. I was worried about this based on other reviews but I could easily heat or cool my room without issue. Otherwise the beds were fine, the bathroom was also good, and the rooms were a good size. The hotel itself has quite old/quaint furniture which I didn't kind but if you want something modern this hotel is a bit lacking in that front. The onsen was ok. Nothing amazing, but not bad either.

Arriving on the train and the short walk through the town to the hotel was a perfect start to the stay in Matsumoto. The hotel is a lovely old building with all the comforts you could need. The staff are very obliging and nothing is too much trouble. The room was spacious enough for 4 people, with traditional futon plus the low table on the tatami. The onsen is lovely, and opening hours cater for those who might be a little shy about communal bathing. A 4am solo onsen was just the ticket! The breakfast buffet catered for all tastes, and it was great to see most guests tucking into a hearty Japanese breakfast. But if cereal and yoghurt is your thing, then that’s covered as well.

Very high class hotel, beautiful looking main building. The vicinity from Matsumoto Castle was great. Everything is walkable within 10-25 min roughly. Also, I arrived early to leave my luggage before checking in while I toured the city. When I came back after 3pm to check in, they had already put my luggage in the room for me. Exquisite service! Rooms are quite big for Japanese hotels. Felt nice to have room to put/organize luggage. Japanese breakfast was exquisite and onsen/sento facility on site were great. Free water in fridge and the city of Matsumoto prides itself on its clean spring water. The water was so soft! And drinkable from tap.

The rooms in this historic establishment are very spacious and comfortable despite their age. The room was beautifully laid out, the lighting was excellent, and the individually controlled a/c allows you to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Rooms in the main building can be accessed by elevator. The location close by the castle is very convenient. The hotel is also within walking distance of several shopping and dining areas. The staff is wonderful - so helpful and friendly. I hope I can stay here again in the future.

Great Buffet Breakfast with many fresh local food well prepared. Rooms were slightly bigger than our expectations, and clean. Helpful stuff has provided many local tourist information when asked. Unlike those modern hotels, Kagetsu Matsumoto hotel is set with many antiques displayed, A nice at Home feel! Within 5-10min walk to nice restaurants, antique shops, small shops & riverside nice walking area. Highly recommend place to stay to whoever has chance to visit Matsumoto.
